Almost three-quarters of NHS staff who have been made redundant in recent months are female, figures have suggested.

Data obtained by the Health Service Journal (HSJ) shows that 74% of those who lost their jobs were women.

The figures, from the most recent report prepared for the NHS Commissioning Board on the Department of Health's "people tracker", which monitors NHS employees, also found that staff over the age of 40 were more likely to be made redundant.

The HSJ said that 77% of those who received redundancy packages were over the age of 40.

The figures show that between April 1 and June 30, 105 staff were made redundant from primary care trusts and strategic health authorities, including 50 compulsory redundancies.

Of these, 81 were women and 82 were over the age of 40.

Labour's shadow health minister Jamie Reed said: "As the Government's reorganisation inflicts chaos on the NHS, its women employees are being hit hardest.

"Thousands of NHS jobs are being thoughtlessly axed across the country and this out-of-touch Government is letting women bear the brunt of it."
