British Gas has launched a new "plain English" guide to its bills and contracts after a study showed that over half of small firms were baffled by jargon.

A survey of 1,000 businesses revealed that most could not explain the terms "deemed pricing", "out of contract", "unit price" or "kilowatt hour".

One in four said they spent too long dealing with their energy bills, contracts and pricing renewals because of the jargon used by suppliers.

British Gas said it had worked with the Plain English Campaign to produce a new guide to help businesses understand energy billing.
