Who would you like to be in charge of the Budget box?(Image: Fiona Hanson - PA Wire)

After a disastrous few years - where the pound has collapsed, house prices have crashed, the banks have been bailed out, sold or nationalised, the economy sunk into its worst-ever recession and unemployment soared - could another chancellor have done a better job?

We asked you to vote for your ideal chancellor from a list of nine people, including big names from the world of business, noted thinkers and the three politicans who want the keys to Number 11 Downing Street after the coming general election.

Here's how you voted:

1 Sir Richard Branson - 29%
2 Vince Cable - 23%
3 Sir Alan Sugar- 15%
4 George Osborne - 8%
5 Alistair Darling/Mervyn King - 7%
7 Stephen Hawking - 6%
8 Stelios Haji-Ioannou - 3%
9 Robert Peston - 2%

Interestingly, you'd like Sir Richard Branson to bring his business acumen to tackling the nation's finances. But what's arguably even more interesting is Liberal Democrat treasury spokesman Vince Cable coming in second place. He came a long way ahead of the current chancellor George Osborne and his predecessor Alistair Darling.
