Unemployment has fallen for the past four months

Unemployment has fallen for the fourth month in a row and more jobs are being created, especially for people over the age of 65, new figures have shown.

The jobless total fell by 65,000 to 2.58 million in the quarter to May, the lowest for almost a year, while the number of people in employment increased by 181,000 to just under 30 million, the highest for almost four years.

But the numbers claiming jobseeker's allowance jumped by 6,100 last month to 1.6 million, including an increase of 8,000 among women to 530,700, the highest figure for 17 years.

The Office for National Statistics said the increase among women was likely to have been affected by a change in eligibility rules for lone parent income support from May.

Long-term unemployment has also increased, with those out of work for more than two years up by 18,000 to 441,000, the worst figure since 1997.

The unemployment rate is now 8.1%, down by 0.2 percentage points, although the jobless total is 132,000 higher than a year ago. The biggest falls in unemployment, and increase in work, were in London, suggesting that the Olympic Games is having an impact on the figures.

Employment Minister Chris Grayling said: "This is an encouraging set of figures in what is still an incredibly difficult economic climate. Not only is unemployment falling but in overall terms there are now almost 100,000 less people on benefits since the 2010 election. We still have a long way to go but this is a step in the right direction."

Unison general secretary Dave Prentis said: "Sadly the unemployed cannot and the Government should not take comfort from these figures. The Olympic effect may give the impression of a recovery, but it is a mirage. The number of long-term unemployed is still rising, and huge numbers of women and young people are still struggling to find work."

But TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "These figures are excellent news. People will be relieved to see unemployment falling sharply and redundancies decreasing.

"It is also encouraging to see full-time jobs making up three-quarters of recent employment growth, and there has been a welcome increase in vacancies. The labour market is proving far more resilient than the rest of the economy."

I doubt that it is a case of people finding work with all those lovely jobs going begging out there (not).

They've probably just been kicking people off JSA.

These figures seem to be more and more of a joke everytime they get published, the jobless total fell by 65000 but the total in employment increased by 181000, where did the extra 115000 people come from if they weren't already jobless?  Then on top of that, the number of people claiming jobseekers allowance INCREASED by 6100.  According to this, there are less people without jobs, more people in work, AND more people claiming jobseekers, surely someone in the government must have noticed something dodgy with the figures here, or are they deliberately not putting the immigration figures out at the same time?  And of course the Olympics are having an effect on job creation, G4S was supposed to find 10000 people for security(fair enough, they failed), but them jobs aren't going to last a lifetime are they, they are there while the Olympics are here, when the Olympics is gone, all of those people will no longer have their jobs and their will be another massive increase in unemployment.  These figures need looking at properly, and tying in with other figures like immigration, jobs created by temporary facilities and the number of people coming off disability and onto jobseekers.  Maybe then we will have a better picture about the economy.

School leavers not wishing to go to Uni and graduates leaving Uni this year will add to the unemployment figures. These unfortunate soles will not show up on the records until six months
from now.  There is little or no future in Britain for intelligent young minds.

Absolute B O L L O X.

Its just fixing the figures.

More people being taken from one Benefit and moved to another-so they can then be discounted from the 'seeking work' section.

As usual the government has chosen to manipulate the figures and what appears to be a drop in unemployment is in fact a false account of people on JSA being moved to other benefits or being forced out of the system for various reasons. The statistics can be made to show many things when manipulated in the way that the DWP choose, there is a massive shortfall of work in the UK and a job for some is low wages and poor conditions amounting to abuse in some cases. The continuing influx of foreign nationals further exacerbates the issue. When will the real, honest truth about our economy be told. As with much of the western worlds economy, greed and lies have been the aims of our masters. They have destroyed industry after industry with no sign of remorse, damn the stock market and successive government self serving. Give people the power and let us live our lives without the corruption of high office.

these will be the pensioners that are stopping the younger people getting jobs ,who should not be counted as if they are 65 they wont be claiming JSA ,also they wont be counting all the cheap labour that should be doing security at olympics, because they worked out that £6.00 an hour isno money in london when they will have to pay the inflated prices because of olympics ,TELL THE TRUTH IT IS BECAUSE YOU HAVE KICKED PEOPLE OF JSA WITH NO MONEY SO THEY DO NOT COUNT

Complete collapse is coming to Europe and North America. Monopoly Capitalism is unsustainable. It is built on the premise of a 2.3 to 1 ratio of those working replacing those not working. It requires more people-be it population through births or immigration  Infnite growth is an impossibility. The Planet does not have infinite Resources. There will be further rioting soon. We need this Parliament overthrowing-The whole of it is corrupt and just propping up the exsting rotting system.
