In most cases the more people you can get together, the bigger your purchasing muscle becomes and the cheaper it works out. However, you don't need to start calling everyone in your phonebook: even a small group can qualify for discounts.
And if friends and family are proving a pain to organise, there are now a number of online communities where group power is taking off.
