If you're planning to head off for a summer holiday, be wary of so-called distraction scams, which are often carried out on unsuspecting travellers.

According to Experian, a common trick is to claim you've dropped some money while you're at an ATM, then steal your cash and card while your attention is elsewhere.

Of course it doesn't just happen while abroad. Perpetrators operate under an array of guises, including salespersons, council staff or workers from utility companies. If you're ever called at home, ask for ID before letting them in and, if you're still not satisfied, call the company they say they are from independently.
