Penny (Royal Mint)

As it wasn't the lowest value coin, the 'old' penny had a higher value than it does today, with the museum estimating it would be worth almost 5p.

While obviously the modern penny is worth 100th of a pound, it would take 240 old pennies to make a pre-decimal pound.

Explaining the coin's features, Clancy at the Royal Mint Museum said: "Originally a Roman symbol, the image of Britannia was used on English and then British coins from the reign of Charles II."
