Pay rises close in on inflation

A study of recent pay deals has found median rises of two and a half per cent in the three months to July

Pay rises are lagging inflation by less than 1%, the closest the two measures have been since wage rises first fell behind in December 2009, according to research.

A study of recent deals showed median rises of 2.5% in the three months to July, up by 0.5% from the previous quarter.

Pay information firm XpertHR said the headline figure had lifted because there were few public sector deals in the quarter.

Headline pay awards are 0.7% behind July's RPI inflation figure of 3.2%, said the report.

One in six of the 83 settlements studied involved a pay freeze, while around one in eight were worth 4% or more.

Sheila Attwood of XpertHR said: "Although private sector pay settlements are holding steady at a median of 2.5%, there is little evidence of upward pressure, with two-thirds of awards in the matched sample worth the same as, or less than, the award in the previous year.

"Even outside the public sector, we are still seeing one settlement in six resulting in a pay freeze."

Got to agree Dave i haven't had a pay rise for 7 yrs like all businesses if they don't make a profit you don't get a rise, but it doesn't stop the MPs giving themselves a rise every year

i think you all need to take another look at what is going on in this country i work for a housing and council tax benefit agency and i can tell you there is a hell of a lot more british people on our system than foreigners the immigrants coming over to this country most of the time will do the jobs that lazy yes LAZY british people on benefits will not do im sorry but beggers cant be choosers and any job is a job at the minute people need to be a little less proud in these tough times so if you people took down your white hoods and took a real look at the country you may see the real problem british youngsters brought up in a country that teaches them to have kids young and live on benefits because 'it pays to be on benefits'

I still think the fairest way to deal with employees is to include them in a 'WORKERS CHARTER 'where by all workers including part time get a share of any profits, like John Lewis Ptnshp.  That way all business's will prosper far more,it is a very good incentive.

Complete and utter fabricated rubish. Private sector pay rise is and has been a "median" zero for a few years now. Where on earth do these researcher's get their figures from???
